In the wake of stepped up enforcement by Immigration and Customs Enforcement at farms and other employers, APS introduces a new service: Reviews of I-9 and other employer-required documentation for non-citizen employees.
Trained bilingual APS staff are available to visit your farm or workplace to ensure that the business has accurate I-9 forms, or will help your farm or business complete those forms for existing and new employees to comply with the law.
In late 2009, ICE targeted four dairy farms in Vermont as part of a nationwide sweep of employers known to have noncitizen employees. In Vermont, that meant dairy farms. The targeted farms were ordered to turn over all I-9 forms and supporting payroll records to prove the farms legally hired the noncitizen employees on the farm. The farms had three days to comply with orders. Those farms found not to have their paperwork in order face fines and penalties.
For many farmers, this enforcement action brought into sharp focus the need to make sure their paperwork for similar employees was in order. It also brought up many questions about compliance.
